The Buchanan Gardens Apartments is a 111-unit affordable rental community in Arlington, VA that is a great example of how historic renovation and sustainable design can be achieved to preserve and maintain housing. In addition to standard unit upgrades, the renovations to Buchanan Gardens protect occupant health, improve energy, water efficiency, and reduce the property’s overall environmental impact. Improvements included storm-water, erosion, and sediment control systems, bicycle storage to augment the site’s proximity to public transit, water-efficient landscaping, the inclusion of low-flow and water-conserving fixtures, high SEER electric heat pump HVAC systems, and energy efficient windows to provide optimized energy performance. Buchanan Gardens received EarthCraft certification in November 2012.
